The Delhi High Court refused on Wednesday by suspending the sentence of seven years imprisonment given to Sushil and Gopal Ansal in the matter of tampering with the evidence in the incident of fire cinema. Justice Subramaniam Prasad said, "As far as the Ansal brothers are concerned, I am dismissing this petition."
Last year, the Ansal brothers and former court employee Dinesh Chand Sharma and two others - P. P. Batra and Anoop Singh Karat were sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the trial court and the sessions court refused to adjourn the sentence and released them on bail. Justice Prasad allowed the plea of co-convict Anoop Singh Karaat to stay the sentence.
Dismissing the application seeking suspension of sentence till the magistrate's court decides on the appeal filed against the conviction, the sessions court had observed that it was the most serious matter of its kind and it amounted to interference with the process of criminal justice. It is the result of a well thought out conspiracy of the culprits.
