11 people died due to electrocution during Rath Yatra in Thanjavur
An accident took place in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu during the Rath Yatra of the Upper Temple in Kalimedu.
A tragic accident has happened in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. During the Rath Yatra of the Upper Temple in Kalimedu, many people came under the grip of high voltage wires. 11 people have died due to electrocution. Many people have also been injured in the accident. The injured have been admitted to Thanjavur Medical College. PM Modi and the CM of the state have expressed grief over the incident.
Police said that some children were also among the dead people. On receiving information about the accident, police reached the spot and started relief and rescue operations. The accident happened when the Rath Yatra was being taken out in the early hours of Wednesday. Many devotees had come from nearby villages during the Rath Yatra. Police and eyewitnesses said the chariot was passing through a bend. Meanwhile, the people standing on the chariot came in the grip of a high voltage wire.
President Ram Nath Kovind has condoled the Thanjavur incident. “The death of many people including children due to electrocution in a procession in Thanjavur is a tragedy. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. He said.
Prime Minister Modi has also expressed his deep sadness. The prime minister also tweeted compensation for the families of the dead and injured. The Prime Minister said: "Deeply saddened by the accident in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. My condolences go out to the bereaved at this time of sadness. I hope the injured recover soon.The Prime Minister went on to say that the relatives of those who died in the accident would each receive Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
