Elon Musk Responds as 3 Lakh Canadians Petition to Revoke His Citizenship: Elon Musk has said he considers himself an American citizen despite being born in South Africa and holding dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. In a post shared on X this morning, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) said that he identifies only as American, without using a hyphenated identity.
This declaration comes days after a petition to remove Musk’s Canadian citizenship garnered more than 3 lakh signatures amid growing US-Canada tensions. Tech mogul and world's richest man Elon Musk has citizenship of three countries: South Africa, the United States, and Canada. He gained the citizenship of Canada at birth when he was born in Pretoria, South Africa. Musk's mother, Maye Musk, was born a Canadian citizen in Regina, Saskatchewan, so Musk automatically inherited Canadian citizenship by descent, according to CIC News. Also Read: Noida Man Dies After Car Falls Into Drain Following GPS Directions
Under current Canadian law, children born outside of Canada can inherit Canadian citizenship from their parents, but only for one generation. This means that if a parent is a Canadian citizen—whether by birth or naturalization—their child will also be a citizen, even if born abroad. The petition says that Musk has now become a member of a foreign government attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty and that his attempts to attack Canadian sovereignty must be addressed. Musk has Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk (nee Halderman), who was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. Currently, Elon Musk has a dual Canadian-US citizenship. Also Read: Donald Trump Vows to End ‘Savage Conflict’ in Ukraine
Musk seemingly tried to distance himself from his South African ancestry in an X post shared a few hours ago. He completely glossed over his Canadian citizenship in the process. “Should note that I grew up as English South African, not Afrikaans, and consider myself to be simply an American. No hyphen,” he wrote. “That said, what’s happening in South Africa is deeply wrong. Not what Mandela intended at all,” Musk added. Also Read: Trump Criticizes India for ‘Tremendously High Tariffs’ on US Goods
